Golf Swing Plane
Golf is one of the most popular sports of today. It is considered one of America's popular past time- may it be by playing as a golfer or watching as a spectator. For a newbie, golf seems to be a complicated game. Learning all those terminologies is already a confusing task especially if it's your first time to hear them. One of these confusing terminologies is the golf swing plane. If it's your first time to hear it, you may not know what it is, how to use it and where to use it.
A golf swing plane is not a handy tool like a golf swing aid, for example. It is part of playing golf and it will help you improve your game over time. One of PGA's best hitters is Ben Hogan who is known for his advocacy of maintaining a controlled golf swing plane; taking his game to become one of golf's idols.
Going over the technicalities of a swing plane, imagine that your golf swing is a pendulum. Preferably, you'll need to follow a pendulum's arc with your club head when you take it back, through a downswing, upon impact and on a follow-through- this is your swing plane. If it is off-line to right or left, there's a tendency that you'll hook or slice the ball.
* Harmful corrections *
If your swing plane is off, you'll need to make adjustments throughout your swing. These could be slight adjustments or not, the thing is you make them so that you'll hit the ball exactly.
If you are too far outside, you need to straighten your stance or pull in your arms. If you are too far inside, you may need to lean slightly forward to make contact.
These corrections are quite damaging since they take away your power and focus from your shot. You need to master your swing plane through mastering the fundamentals of golf swing.
* Tips to help you master your golf swing plane *
Mastering your stance is the initial thing to do. Bend forward at the hips with knees slightly bent and back flat. Avoid hunching at your shoulders. Keep your back flat so that you won't swing with your arms. When you take a backswing, turn your shoulders to create a torque. The torque will be released at the waist as you bring your club down.
Avoid swinging your body and hips backwards during a back swing since it takes the club head off-plane which most likely end up in a slice. You should twist at the waist and keep your hips still as you make a backswing. Moving your hips forward will result to a hook.
To help you maintain your swing plane, stick in the ground 2 wooden sticks or broken clubs [about 3 inches from each of the tip]. Practice your shots without touching the sticks. Mastering this can help you master your golf swing plane.
